School Cinema is a learning module on life-skills, values and attitudes, developed
through research and taught using short films and thought-provoking workbooks

Over the years, storytelling has evolved from the aural to the visual. The lessons though, haven’t changed. As a ground-breaking pedagogical experiment, School Cinema is making a difference in how school kids are learning life lessons and imbibing values.

In 2010, School Cinema began as a thoughtful and exciting project in supplementing school education with film-based learning modules. The idea was to replace existing Life Skills-based curriculum with an engaging and enlightening system of learning. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Life Skills as “abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”. School Cinema offers Life Skills-Based Education (LSBE) and combines knowledge, values, attitudes and skills that children can learn in an entertaining way.

Why School Cinema?

The reality of how our children are growing up today is very different from what it used to be. The world has enormously changed. Stress, fear, peer pressure, bullying, sexual predators, classroom violence have all taken over our children, and they have more to deal with than our earlier generations ever did. Of course, there has always existed a traditional system of value education that consisted of morals and life skills being passed down through learning systems – whether they were grandma’s tales, folk texts or a narrative tradition.

However, when dealing with the demanding and hectic lifestyles being experienced by our children today, the need of the hour is a type of communication that enthuses them while subtly encouraging and influencing them to make the right choices.

We believe films can be used to provide students with portraits of different social and cultural realities. Films, both fictional and those based on actual events, are valuable teaching tools. Not only do they capture student interest, but also help dramatize and highlight issues closer to them. Follow-up activities and discussions help in keeping interest and also serve as medium to imbibe valuable life lessons. School Cinema serves not just as entertaining tool of instruction, but also serves to expand multicultural awareness and life avenues in children. Through the testimony of educators, parents and education experts, School Cinema is a new horizon in learning values and skills useful for holistic development. From where we see, School Cinema is a grassroots movement supplementing education with value-added education videos and online teaching aids. It is as much ground-breaking as creative. With its vast experience, creative methodology and years of research, they have been using innovative methods to impact India’s education landscape.
